Welcome to PhilSan's World Making your own 8x10 view camera is a rewarding project for anyone that is interested in photography. Building your own camera is not as hard of a project as one might think. PhilSan is made up of Phil & Sandi McCourt, photography is one of our passions that we share. We see vast amounts of images of all parts of the USA, but very little of Cleveland and Northern Ohio. Through our hobby we hope to change that just a little bit. As we are not professional photographers, cost is a major factor when considering equipment. This website attempts to show how we enjoy are hobby without busting the budget.
Take a look at the View Camera Zone it is a starting point for all the large format stuff. Be sure to check out the page So You Want To Build An 8x10 Camera which explains how to come up with a plan to build a camera. Check out the modifications to the 8x10 View Camera. It contains a page of pictures of the construction process.
I have built an 8x10 view camera that has changed the way I make photographs. It is big, slow and heavy so you get to take your time with a shot. Take a look at the PhilSan Photography page to read about the type of photography that we get involved with. We are rather proud of this corner of the world we live in, so view some Images of Cleveland and Ohio. Once you snap that shutter and expose the film the real fun begins when you get to the darkroom. Read a little about my darkroom and how I manage to keep it stocked on a limited budget.
